How to Choose a Lip Colour

Bright blue lips

Choosing a lip colour can be as simple as just trying on lots of shades. Lips tend to be a bit naturally darker or redder than the face and skin, so any colour that reflects this is always a good starting point.

Rosy, coral, and red shades are likely to look good because they reflect this natural feature. Many people believe that there are one or two colours that will be ‘right’ for them but buying and wearing make-up is not an exact science, and what looks good is mostly a matter of perception. With lip colour, it is just important to be happy wearing the product and to know that it feels good on.

If lips are naturally really red or dark, then neutral muted tones will look extremely pale. Unless choosing a high fashion nude, then look for slightly warmer shades, which will be neutral without looking drained.

Bright colours often brighten up a face, and they can look particularly good on older people. Try all shades of bright pink, red, and coral for the biggest lift.

Creating a Clean Lip Line

There are many ways to get a clean lip line with lip colour application. This looks good on most people but is really essential for the polished look, which has been fashionable in beauty for the last five years.

Smooth a little concealer or highlight products such as YSLTouche Eclat or By Terry Touche Expert around the lip line. Take this over the lips and blend extremely well, just blocking out the lip line a little. This will give a clean look around the mouth.

Use a lip pencil to define lips before lipstick application. This could be a soft neutral colour or a shade that matches the lipstick. If a soft, natural look is desired, then just use the side of the pencil in small strokes to draw a natural lip line. Take lipstick over this, keeping just the edge crisp.

If lipstick bleeds a lot, then try an invisible lip liner, which is just a silicone or wax-based product. Draw it around the outside of the lips, and lipstick will be repelled, staying within the lip rather than bleeding out.

Long-Lasting Lip Color

Keeping lip colour on can be a struggle for some, but there are plenty of formulas available that will last without drying lips.

Some long-lasting lip products are still extremely drying, and whilst they do stay on, they never really make lips look good. Look for some of the new moisturizing formulas which stay looking smooth and plump. Try By Terry for smooth hydration and Nars for classic matte lips, which do not look shrivelled.

Using a lip brush applies colour in a thinner layer, working it into the lips and ensuring that it stays on longer.
Layering pencil under cream lipstick usually keeps colour on longer.

If lasting lip colour is a real problem, try using a lip pencil to fill out the whole lip, then just dab a very little lip balm over it to take away the dry look.

Edible Products for Lipstick Eaters

Many people eat a lot of their lipstick. This can be from an unconscious licking of the lips throughout the day but also comes from wearing lipstick when eating meals and drinking. This poses problems of ingesting a range of non-food ingredients as well as disappearing color on the lips.

If possible, remove lipstick before meals by simply wiping the lips with a napkin. This will minimize the amount of lipstick ingested.

If you eat your lipstick as a habit or with meals, check product ingredients very carefully. Look to avoid too much petroleum as well as common ingredients such as lead. Try Aveda, who actually put digestive herbs in their edible plant-based lipsticks.
If lip licking is the problem, make a conscious effort to remember not to do this. Keep lips well moisturized with a good lip balm so that they do not feel dry or in need of moistening. Try Eos lip balm spheres or Lush lip balm tins.

Lipstick has had a fashion revival for the last few seasons, starting with a traditional matte red, through to Gothic plum-black, and now the look is a bit more natural. Red and cranberry stains always seem to come back for winter, while summer palettes incorporate brights and petal colours. Whichever you choose, lipstick is to be worn with conviction.
