Christmas cookies

These are great edible gifts for the whole family

Gifts need not be expensive or rare finds to be appreciated. Some of the best Christmas gifts are homemade, and what better gift than an edible one.

Christmas is a time for giving thanks, counting your blessings, celebrating with family and friends, and let’s not forget…a time for gifts. No matter how you slice it, Christmas is the ultimate gift-giving season. What if you have a hard-to-shop-for recipient on your list, or you have a tight budget this year? Fret not, for Christmas gifts are easier and cheaper to come by than you may think.

Food is always a good way to show you care, but it can be boring, so let’s spice it up a bit. Don’t just give an overpriced store-bought basket with a few big boxes with small portions inside. Instead, get creative, get inspired, and have some fun with homemade gifts that will delight everyone on your list and will ease the pressure on your wallet.

Gifting grub for the manly man on your list

Have a hunter or outdoorsman on your list? Give a gift he’s sure to appreciate; try going down to your local butcher for a variety of deer sticks and sausages; meat processor usually has an abundance of deer meat this time of year. Accompany the meat with a knife and a sharpening stone. For the true outdoorsman, how about some homemade trail mix, toasted nuts, jerky, and fish breading mix all wrapped up in a cooler with a big red bow on top.

The Christmas wino

What about the wine connoisseur on your list? How about giving them a picnic basket with a bottle of wine, some cheese, crackers, a box of chocolates, or a pair of wine glasses. Keep in mind you don’t have to spend a small fortune for a nice bottle of wine. Check your local wineries or your grocery store for a good but inexpensive bottle of wine. Other gift ideas for a wine lover this Christmas could include some wine accessories like a corkscrew, a wine bottle holder, or a book on wine.

Newlyweds and new parents

Any newlyweds or new parents on your list? Money or gift cards are always appreciated but so are household items. If they are on a tight budget–what couple isn’t these days–you could give the couple some kitchen utensils, an assortment of quick and easy food, like hamburger helper and a box of brownie or muffin mix, all wrapped up in a big mixing bowl with shrink wrap. Another homemade gift basket for newlyweds or new parents could include a cookbook with the nonperishable food items to one or two of your favorite recipes.

A great gift for new parents, especially, is the gift of time. Give them a gift card to their favorite shopping spot, spa, or movie theater; accompany the gift card with a babysitting voucher to give them a little break from baby.
